How to Make Money with VIPKID

Spread the love

how to

Sitting at home wondering if VIPKids can actually make you money? The premise of teaching kids English kids online seemed almost too easy, so I wanted to know if there was some sort of pyramid scheme and if this business was truly legitimate. So I asked my friend Katherine, a VIPKID extraordinaire about her honest experience and here’s what I found out.

What is VIPKID?

VIPKID is a fully immersive learning experience that connects qualified “teachers” with students who want to learn English through an internet platform. Student ages range from 4-12 years old and are predominantly located in China.

Here’s how it works:

  • Parents enroll their children into the VIPKID program in order to learn English.
  • Teachers are provided lesson plans so no content prep work is required.
  • The lessons are short, about 25 minutes and completed online.
  • Teachers are given a 5 minute break to drink water and type feedback to the parents about student progress.

What are VIPkid qualifications to teach?

The first question that I asked Katherine what the signup process looked like. Thankfully, the process sounded fairly straight forward. The good news is that you do not need to be qualified to teach with VIPKID. Think of your role as more of a tutor than an actual credentialed teacher. And you do not need to know how to speak Cantonese or Mandarin!

Here’s what you need to have to qualify to teach with VIPKID.

  • Be legally eligible to work in the U.S. or Canada.
  • Have a bachelor’s degree or higher (it doesn’t have to be in teaching).
  • Have at least one year of experience teaching, tutoring, coaching, or mentoring.
  • Access to the internet and the use of a webcam with audio enabled

Katherine graciously offered to answer any additional questions about the interview process with her direct email address at  kmfox7@gmail.com.

How do you get paid?

VIPKID pays you through direct deposit, so you don’t have to worry about waiting for checks in the mail or having to deal with a random third party payment website. Just make sure to have your checking account routing number and account number ready to sign up after you’ve been approved to teach with VIPKID. The VIPKID website quotes the pay rate is between $14  to $22 an hour dependent on skills and experience.

Is this job flexible?

Katherine, or Teacher Kat, as she’s known by her students, says that flexibility is one of the main benefits of working with VIPKID. Teachers have the ability to submit availability on a weekly basis and VIPKID will schedule your classes based off of that information.

Katherine says, “There’s a lot of extra incentives [to earn money]. You can work as little or as much as you would like.”

Katherine loves to get creative with her lessons and makes her own props! She previously worked as a teacher, but now enjoys teaching with VIPKID on her own schedule.

Can I teach if I already have a full-time job?

As a friend of Katherine’s, I can attest to her hard work ethic. She not only works full time as an Instructional Design in corporate but also teaches with VIPKid, in addition to teaching clarinet lessons on the side. She emphasizes finding a rhythm that works for your schedule when you submit your availability.

When I started working for VIPKID, I booked classes five mornings per week. I have NEVER been a morning person! Now I average 10 students per week and wake up when it’s realistic for me. I can also open up evenings on the weekend at the last minute if I have them free. This is much better!

Best Practices for VIPkid Teachers

Why should I sign-up for VIPkid?

Overall, VIPkid is a legitimate way to make money on the side, especially if you like to teach or tutor children. Although Katherine has a formal education background, you do not need expensive certificates or degrees besides your Bachelor’s. The pay is sent via direct deposit and there is a lot of flexibility with your time.

When I asked, Katherine to share her reason for signing up for VIPKID, here’s what she said.

“I’ve always been (a little too) motivated to earn extra money. I remember selling potholders in elementary school. I’m always striving to find balance and live life in a healthy way.”

She writes about how some tough times pushed her to pay off her debt.

In March of 2015 my whole life changed. I had a subarachnoid hemorrhage. This is a rare form of a stroke. I spent two weeks in the hospital, but I could have died. I came out of it with no damage whatsoever. I did have an extra $10K in medical debt, but it didn’t seem to matter anymore. I wanted to be healthy, take care of myself and find balance.

In April 2017 I finally finished paying off my debt… Soon after I finished saving my full emergency fund and downpayment on my home.”

She continued to explain that she paid off over $65,000 in student loans and some medical expenses from her full-time job and side hustles! Now she is working to save for a new car. Great job, Kat!

Katherine is truly inspiring!
